About Joe Hindley
Joseph Steven Hindley was born September 25, 1949 in Neptune, New Jersey.
He attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, Newark, N.J from 1967-1971 on a merit scholarship and was soon after drafted into the army where he was trained as a photographer but, worked primarily as a mural painter for the commanding general at Fort Riley, in Kansas .
He was honored as a member of the army\'s Combat Artists Team. An elite artist group working for Special Services to \"artistically\" express army life for a collection of artworks curated by the department of military history . Hindley was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for his work.
After his army discharge Hindley stayed in Kansas painting and using the facilities at Kansas State University and the University of Kansas to explore a variety of mediums, i.e. printmaking, ceramic, film and anything to expand his creative options.
Hindley moved to Chicago in 1980 to establish his career as a imagist artist. The \"imagist\" style was very popular there at the time. He had great success with that work, including numerous works collected by the state of Illinois and awarded an NEA grant, but was compelled to move on artistically.
His exhibition resume includes:
The Art Institute of Chicago
The Chicago Cultural Center
The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio
The Rochester Center for Photography, Rochester, New York
and many other museum, university and commercial galleries.
This resume also includes large scale mural works on the walls of:

Hindley now resides in Sawyer, Michigan where his 4000 s.f. studio, built originally as the Flynn Theater, contains an extraordinary collection of art from his 35 years of prolific creation.
Since 1994 Hindley has wintered and worked in Mexico . He travels also to the southwest to paint landscapes. \" Vistas so striking a blind man can see them\".
